Tottenham are extremely keen on bringing in Manchester United defender Luke Shaw if the left back fails to secure a first-team spot at the club – reports Yahoo Sports. The defender was one of the most expensive acquisitions in the defence for United, as he moved from Southampton to Old Trafford in a £30 million deal. The transfer took place in 2014, but Shaw has been unable to make any sort of an impact. His time at the club has been plagued by injuries.
Jose Mourinho was a manager who was extremely keen on signing him when he was at Chelsea. Just when it seemed that he would be able to establish himself as one of the best left back’s in the country under Jose Mourinho, the situation has progressed from bad to worse for the player. Shaw has been on the fringes of the first team in the last couple of months. Even though he has recovered sufficiently from an injury problem suffered in November, manager Mourinho has preferred using right back Matteo Darmian in the left back spot.
Shaw has made only 14 appearances in the league this season. As a result, it is widely rumoured that he would be one of the first names to depart the club in the summer. A number of clubs are believed to be looking at the situation, but Tottenham’s entry into the picture has changed the dynamics. Even though Spurs possess one of the best left-backs in the country – Danny Rose, manager Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be keen on strengthening the defence. The club lost midfielder Tom Carroll in the January transfer window and it was highly anticipated that Ben Davies would be the second major departure at White Hart Lane.
The left back, however, was pursued to stay at the club owing to names like Jan Vertonghen suffering long-term injuries. Davies was heavily linked with a move to Crystal Palace. However, it may not be long before the Welshman get his wish. In order to replace the 24-year-old, Tottenham appears to have switched their attention towards Shaw. It would take a lot of transfer fee in order to acquire the services of Shaw. Manchester United no longer feel ready to take losses on their big signings.
The club could have easily suffered heavy losses on players like Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay. Yet, they seem to have learnt their lessons from the sale of Angel di Maria and several others. Hence, Shaw is unlikely to come cheap if Spurs decide to pursue their interest in the summer. One of the aspects in favour of the North London outfit is that the player has a contract with United only until the summer of 2018.
