Wayne Rooney’s future at Manchester United looks grim, as he appears to have made up his mind on a move away from the club as early as in the next 24 hours. The Sun has reported that Rooney’s departure could be confirmed, as he is ready to cut his ties with the club. Rooney is more than happy with becoming the club’s record goal scorer after having gone past Sir Bobby Charlton’s 249 goals. After his goal against Stoke City, Rooney is now the all-time top goal scorer for United with 250 goals. It has taken him a long time to achieve this landmark after having raced to 200 plus goals.
Even if the transfer does not take place in the next 24 hours, Rooney is almost certain to leave the club in the summer. He has several offers from the Chinese Super League with reports of even £1 million per week offer on the table. Even though the 31-year-old striker has a huge contract with wages of £250,000 per week, Rooney currently takes four weeks to make £1 million. Such an offer will make Rooney the best-paid player in the world by some distance, even though Carlos Tevez currently makes in excess of £600,000 per week after his transfer to Shanghai Shenhua.
Rooney has been at Old Trafford since 2004 after moving to the club in a £27m deal from Everton. Alex Ferguson placed a lot of faith in the young striker, despite several calls about his judgement back then. It has proven to be one of the most successful transfers made by United since the turn of the millennium. Apart from scoring 250 goals, Rooney has also helped the club when every major honour from the League Cup to the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup. It is these huge number of trophies which seem to have convinced Rooney that now is the time to leave United after having broken a huge record.
The 31-year-old would leave the club on a high rather than on a down. After having won all these trophies, the England captain would feel that he could experience a new challenge in a new environment. The striker will certainly receive a lot of offers from home and abroad, but it seems that he has chosen the path of riches. Not many will complain about this decision considering that Rooney has become one of the most successful strikers in world football. Even though Rooney may not match Ryan Giggs’ trophy tally, he remains hugely successful with 10 major honours at United.
He has also won individual accolades like the PFA Player’s Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.
