Manchester United v Liverpool - UEFA Europa League Round of 16 Second Leg

Manchester United’s third kit for the 2017-18 season has just been leaked online. The kit has just been posted on Instagram. It shows that the kit would come with a silhouette of the iconic statue outside Old Trafford featuring Sir Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, and George Best. This grey kit is likely to draw a lot of criticism – both positive and negative – for its unique style.

Adidas will be paying Manchester United a whopping £750 million over the period of 10 years, which began in the 2014-15 season. It is the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in the game, but it is said to be soon eclipsed by Real Madrid’s shirt sponsorship deal. The Spanish giants are currently in discussions with Adidas for a deal which would see the club receive around £100 million per season.

It would represent a drastic increase over United’s contract, which is £75 million per year. More importantly, United’s contract with Adidas includes a clause which will allow the German sportswear giant to reduce the fee substantially if United failed to qualify for the Champions League.

This is Manchester United's third kit for the 2017-18 season, according to reports

United made the decision to reveal the third kit after reportedly coming under pressure from fans for the lack of options. The club recently became the richest in the world according to a study by Deloitte. United have overtaken Real Madrid, who have had a stranglehold on the position for the last decade, with a massive jump in revenues. The club has made £ 515 million in revenue over the last 12 months compared to just £463 million by the Spanish club, who have dropped to third behind rivals Barcelona. Undoubtedly, the sponsorship deal with Adidas will improve the finances of Madrid in the coming years, but United are the supreme holders of the title right now.

A major chunk of the additional revenue has been contributed by the TV money. Premier league TV deals have risen incredibly over the last decade, but they have not helped United dominate Madrid largely because the Spanish club was, until now, capable of negotiating its own TV deals. Madrid also have a sizable commercial income. United will be hoping that the new third helps the club potentially increase the commercial income as well.

Fans will have to fork out a huge sum of money in order to buy this shirt, as it has also been revealed that the adult replica shirts will cost a whopping £90 while the children’s kit will set fans back by £40. Even then, sizable interest is expected upon the shirts as has been shown by sales in the past even when the prices have been exorbitant.
