Manchester United are ready to bring in two new faces in January if the club managed to ship out Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay as expected, according to the reports from the Mirror. Jose Mourinho recently confirmed that the squad does not have any player listed as not for sale, as every player has their price. He says that he would not have any problem in selling one of the United players to a direct rival, which is usually not the norm in the United Kingdom. Memphis Depay, Schweinsteiger, and Morgan Schneiderlin are some of the names expected to leave the club in January.
Schweinsteiger, though, could be a major doubt, as Mourinho is reportedly contemplating the prospect of keeping the German World Cup winner until the end of the season at the least. He had been in discussions with MLS clubs like Chicago Fire over the last few months. However, no move has been announced as of yet and Schweinsteiger looks set to remain at the club until the end of the campaign.
Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay, though, have not been able to get any chance in the first team and they look highly unlikely to stay at United. Everton have already confirmed that they would be interested in bringing the duo. The replacements for both these players are likely to be defenders, who would strengthen the defence in case players like Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling decide to exit the club.
United have been scouting Benfica defender Victor Lindelof for quite some time. The Swedish talent could be persuaded to join the Premier league outfit largely because of the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, the immense transfer demands of the Portuguese outfit may result in the transfer being called off. Benfica are also reportedly looking to tie up defender Victor Lindelof on an even longer contract. His current deal runs out in the summer of 2020, but a new contract is expected to jump up the release clause in his contract to £ 60 million.
Jose Fonte, though, is likely to be a much cheaper alternative with the player expected to cost only £15 million from Southampton. United were linked with the defender, who has the same agent as Mourinho, in the summer. However, the deal could not be agreed between the two clubs at the last moment since United’s interest came late in the transfer window.
Fonte will provide a versatile option to the United defence, which has excelled in the last few games.
Major surprises might come in the form of Matteo Darmian, who was widely seen with a swift exit in January, and Schweinsteiger. It looks like United may retain Darmian, who has been a regular fixture at the back.
