Ray Parlour believes that Tottenham striker Harry Kane would be a great fit for Manchester United. His comments are unlikely to be welcomed by Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham, who are reportedly facing a major fight to hold on to Kane. Just like Gareth Bale and Luka Modric prior to him, Kane is facing intense rumours linking him with bigger clubs than Tottenham. The links with United have been quite persistent, as the Red Devils remain keen on signing Kane even after more than a year of registering their initial interest. As quoted by Sky Sports, Parlour said:
“I’m sure Manchester United will be looking at him [Kane]. They will be thinking ‘OK, Ibrahimovic is here at the moment but he’s getting on a bit – we might need a new striker soon’.
“He [Kane] could be perfect for Manchester United.”
United do very well know that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is not someone who lets his players on the cheap. Regarded as an extremely tough negotiator in the world of football, Levy recently suspended contract negotiations with Kane. The striker reportedly wants a contract in the region of £95,000 per week in order to move him level with Sissoko. After having finished as the top scorer for the club last season, Kane wants his existing £65,000 per week wages to at least be made on par with other players at the club.
Unsurprisingly, transfer rumours have started linking the player with a move to Old Trafford even though he still has more than three years left on his contract. Since his existing deal runs out only in the summer of 2020, Daniel Levy is certainly not worried about the situation.
Parlour, though, says that Kane would be the perfect replacement for the ageing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It is widely thought that the Swedish striker is being brought United only for the current campaign, as the club would go for a long term signing just like Kane or even the 23-year-old himself. Parlour says that Kane would be an ideal replacement for Ibrahimovic, as he is likely to be shown the door sooner rather than later at 35. The signing of Ibrahimovic is in many ways similar to the deal that brought in Samuel Eto’o to Chelsea when Mourinho came to the club in 2013.
Kane is unlikely to test the British transfer record fee if he continues on this good run of form. At present, the £50 million transfer of Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea remains the biggest transfer fee exchanged between British clubs.
After having finished as the league’s top scorer last season, Kane would have to come up with something special in order to retain the title. Kane has three league goals in six appearances – a far cry from the league’s top scorer Diego Costa, who has nine goals so far. After having spent several weeks on the sidelines with an ankle injury, Kane only recently returned to the starting line-up.
