Antoine Griezmann seems to be entering into the next level as far as his performances are concerned. The Frenchman came with a reputation for being talented, but few would have imagined his progress under the guidance of Diego Simeone. After managing to end up as the Euro 2016 top scorer, Griezmann has continued his form by scoring six goals in just eight games for Atletico. His form has propelled the club to the top of the table, albeit with the same number of points as Real Madrid.

A major factor behind Atletico winning the league title a few years ago was the presence of a goal scorer like Diego Costa. It would not be surprising to see Griezmann perform a similar role, but if Atletico manages to keep him. There are persisting rumours that Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Griezmann. The Frenchman has been a target for Jose Mourinho even when he was at Chelsea. Back then, Atletico had just signed Griezmann from Real Sociedad and were not keen on selling him immediately. Now, though, a sizeable transfer fee would remove Atletico out of the equation.

The French forward has a £89 million release clause in his contract. This was the only stumbling block a couple of years ago, as clubs did not want to pay this amount of money for someone who could have been a one season wonder. Griezmann has shown that he is the real deal and United will not be afraid to make another £89 million purchase. The club had spent this whopping sum of money on Paul Pogba, who could potentially become the trump card in United’s attempts to bring in Griezmann.

A teammate at international level, Pogba is thought to have a close friendship with the 25-year-old. Only recently did the striker admit that the time spent with Pogba during the Euro 2016 had strengthened their bond. He said:

“We get on very well. It is true that the Euros has brought us closer together still.

“Paul is a really nice guy. He is it! We send messages, Snapchats. He’s really a good friend. When he plays with his club, I try to look at it to see if he had a good game or not.”

Even though Pogba himself has been at Old Trafford only for the last couple of months, there is every possibility that he could persuade the striker to join him. United are extremely strong in the forward positions with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Wayne Rooney, and Anthony Martial present along with youth sensation Marcus Rashford. However, both Ibrahimovic and Rooney are entering into the twilight of their careers and this is especially true in the case of the former.

Ibrahimovic has purely been signed with one or two seasons in mind, while Griezmann could prove to be the long-term replacement solution for United’s search for a top goal scorer. United, though, are not the only club in the race to sign the 25-year-old. Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to be in the hunt for the player
