Portugal international Jose Fonte has been linked with a move to the Old Trafford this summer as Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a second centre-back into the squad.
Mourinho has already brought in the former Villarreal’s centre-back Eric Bailly in the squad and is now looking to add his countryman in the squad as his second choice to bolster his defenses.
Fonte has two more years to conclude his contract at Southampton, and while the player does state that he is happy at the Saints, a chance to play the Europa league football next season can be an offer too tempting to let go of. The news comes as a blow to Mourinho as United failed to qualify for the Champions League last year.
“Southampton are a good club in England, where I’ve been treated very well, we have been successful,”-Fonte as told to O Jogo. “However, in football you never know what can happen and it’s obvious that if a world class club who play in the Champions League show up, it’s tempting for me. But I state it again, I’m happy where I am.”
So far the 32-year-old centre-back has received offers from many different clubs this summer, however, it is yet to be seen if Southampton are ready to let go of the player this summer.
