Jose Mourinho has signed several new players since arriving at Old Trafford but must now get to work on moving players’ surplus to requirements. He is reportedly set to clear out a few players before the season kicks-off.
According to Spanish publication El Confidencial, the 53-year-old has already held a meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to discuss the players they should sell.
The Portuguese manager has claimed that he needs only 23 players (including three goalkeepers) to focus on the 2016/17 campaign. Hence, the new manager will need to get rid of a few players, which will help them to compensate the staggering money spent on Paul Pogba.
Three players United should sell right now:
-
Marcos Rojo
Rojo was Van Gaal’s headline defensive signing in the Dutchman’s first season at the club, costing €20 million from Sporting Lisbon plus the free loan of former Manchester United winger Luis Nani on heavily subsidized wages. The Argentine defender was a major flop last season, contributing nothing much to the team. With Luke Shaw back in the squad, his potential target of cementing the left-back slot is now practically taken from him. Rojo’s price tag wouldn’t be less than €15 million currently and United should sell him as soon as they get that kind of deal.
-
Marouane Fellaini
Fellaini has been with the club for 3 years now and still haven’t proved his worth. The former Everton midfielder has been one of the most inconsistent players for United and has been on top of his game at very rare occasions.
If United are to aim to get back on top, selling the Belgium international player wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Now that Jose Mourinho has mentioned that he likes to work with a limited no. of players in his team, it’s about time Fellaini should be prepared to leave Old Trafford.
-
Memphis Depay
Depay’s heroics at PSV resulted in him being known as one of the best upcoming footballers. But sadly, his move to Manchester United ended those claims and praises. His performance for United were good only for a few matches, and had a massive drop in his performance, making him look like an amateur on the pitch. Depay failed horribly last season, failing to impress both the fans and the coach. He also failed to impress Jose in the pre-season, giving a below-average performance. The Dutch winger plays for his nation too and is still very young, and should be sold for a significant amount before it’s too late.
