Wayne Rooney’s testimonial was played against his former club Everton on Wednesday. The match resulted in a 0-0 draw and was a debut match for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly as well as for the United’s newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho who was managing the team for the first time at the Old Trafford.
Following the same Rooney’s agent confirms that the player wants a new contract in place at United, while his current contract runs till 2019. Paul Stretford, Rooney’s agent, has further stated that the player is still a target for many clubs; however, the player wants to stay at United and hence is looking out for a new contract.
“The very best players who perform at the highest level will always be subject to speculation from the biggest and best clubs,” Stretford told TalkSPORT.
“Undoubtedly there has been speculation and undoubtedly there have been enquiries.
“But from Wayne’s point of view, he was determined to stay at Manchester United and agree a new contract.
“That’s evident by the fact that he’s still here going into his 13th year at the club.
“Wayne has gone public in stating that he intends to see out his current contract.
“Should Man United make it clear they want him to stay beyond [2019], I think we’ll be sitting down very quickly and ensuring that will happen.”
Rooney has spent 12 seasons at the Old Trafford and has made 520 appearances for the Red Devils, with further 245 goals to his credit 4 goals short of matching the all-time record of Sir Bobby Charlton, who has 249 goals recorded as an all-time high by a player for United.
