In his first press conference as Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho had clearly stated that he is looking to get a fourth player into the squad, after sealing moves for the Valencia centre back Eric Bailly, Swedish striker Zlatan Ibhrahimovic and the Borussia Dortmund forward Heinrikh Mkhitaryan. Ever since that day, rumours have been floating around that the club is going to make a world record bid for Paul Pogba, who left us for Juventus in 2012 as an 18 year old. The Frenchman has since grown into a terrific central midfielder, and is being chased by all the big clubs across the world. However, it seems that the huge transfer fees has put everyone off, except United who are reportedly going to shell out 120 million pounds for him this summer.
Here’s what former United man Paul Ince told to Sky Sports regarding the Turin superstar: “Pogba coming into a league where it is tough, where he can show what he’s all about, I think is a perfect fit for him and for Man United. Who he plays alongside, whether it’s [Michael] Carrick, [Morgan] Schneiderlin or [Bastian] Schweinsteiger, I don’t know. But if United can get Pogba, then that sends out the signal that we are really going for it this year.”
And I completely agree with him.
Pogba is the kind of midfield enforcer we have been lacking since Paul Scholes retired. Although he didn’t set the world alight in the Euros, yet 4 Serie A and 2 Coppa Italia titles confirm his pedigree. He is technically sound, has good pace and a real goalscoring nac, which was showcased once again last season as he put in 10 goals and set up 12 more for his team all over the season as they want on to win the Italian double.
Infact, as Ince continued:
“Sir Alex Ferguson would have been disappointed to have lost him at such a young age. But I think his style of football will suit the Premier League.”
In fact, the Frenchman will have his national compatriot Morgan Schneiderlin and German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger around him for the next campaign, who can sit back and protect the defence when he goes for his trademark marauding runs upfront. Moreover, his ability to control the game’s tempo and pick right passes under pressure is what we could really do with at the moment, since the midfield is where United have been really poor of late.
Meanwhile, former Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has said Pogba will face a difficult decision on whether to move to United.
“There’s a lot of talk, and I think Juventus want to keep him for at least one more year. But United are a huge club — it’s tough for him to decide what’s best. As an Italian and a former Juventus player, I hope he stays for at least one more year.”
