Food For Thought: Does Manchester United Need Another Right-back?

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho

After signing just one new player as of now, Manchester United are still yet to sign and sell many as the Portuguese manager aims to rebuild the squad.

Jose Mourinho has reportedly transferred listed many players, aiming to sell many players and buying the ones who fit his style of game meanwhile. Numerous players are under the radar of the Red Devils, and that too for pretty much even every position even though that is not required.

Rumors have been rising that the Special One is also looking for someone to fill in the right-back position. In my opinion, it is useless buying these many players, especially for the position where there are already a few decent players to fill up.

Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Varela are able to play on the right-back position, and all of them had a few good games last season playing at that very position, especially Darmian and Valencia.

The Italian defender, Matteo Darmian is supposed to be the main priority for that position, or at least, the aim to buy him was that. And many fans around the world still think that the best is yet to come out of the Italian international. He has provided both pace and composure in every match without a fail, no matter how his overall performance was. Under Jose’s defensive style of play, Darmian might be able to reach heights and should be given many more chances. We’ve seen making crucial runs along the line and delivering winger-like-crosses frequently.

If Darmian fails to improve or fails to perform like a regular starter should, then we obviously have one of the most versatile players of Manchester United to take the job. Antonio Valencia has, in a way, given up his right-out-midfield position and been used to play at the right-back position. And to no surprise, he has been playing well over there too. Composed and strong, running throughout the match, he gives it his all. He has also improved his passing/crossing ability in the previous season for which he was criticised a lot during David Moyes’ time at the club.

Even a thought of buying another right-back or selling Matteo Darmian is irrational. Manchester United needs rebuilding, no doubt, but not in this position.
