Whatever the situation at Old Trafford is, clearly Ed Woodward needs to get things right this summer because the Red Devils are nowhere close to where they were during Fergie’s era.
Manchester United fans have faced many frustrations since Sir Alex Ferguson left his position as the manager of the club. His successor, David Moyes was welcomed in a sheer fashion to the club. But around 10 months after the warm welcome and expectation of the fans, the Scottish manager got sacked. In the following season of 2014/15, ex-Bayern Munich manager, Louis van Gaal was appointed as the manager which boosted the club and the fans. The feeling of glory was just around the corner according to the fans’ anticipations.
In his first season at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal enjoyed a good row of wins and managed to keep the team in the top-four of the league. The team finished fourth that season in the Premier League. But that too didn’t excite the fans as the result of that season was trophy-less even after spending huge amounts of money which was never spent in the club’s history. However, Manchester United managed to get their spot in the Champions League again as they had failed to qualify, finishing seventh in the BPL under David Moyes.
The beginning of 2015/16 was a delight for the fans as United managed to get wins after wins even if they didn’t deserve due to the poor performance. It was more of a luck which kept them away from putting them down in the bottom half of the table. After November 2015, things got worse.
Since then, most of the fans have had it with the Dutch manager and want him replaced by someone who can do a better job.
For the past few months, there have been rumors that managers like Jose Mourinho and Diego Simeone are likely to replace Van Gaal in the summer.
Diego Simeone is one of those managers who can achieve a lot and manage the team very well without spending too much. We have witnessed that in his managerial career at Atletico Madrid.
While, Jose Mourinho has had his success in the Premier League managing Chelsea. He still fails to manage the team without buying world-class players and has never successfully brought young talents into the spotlight.
Simeone has amassed five trophies in total, making him one of the most wanted managers in Europe and put him among the favourites to replace the under-pressure manager Van Gaal at Old Trafford. He can be the best choice for that position at Old Trafford.
His style of play has operated exceptionally against clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. There is no doubt he cannot achieve the same results at Manchester United, given the massive funds which are obviously much more than what is given at Atletico Madrid.
The Argentine coach should be the best choice and the club should go for him. Simeone rejected the same offer after Moyes was sacked back in 2014. Hopefully, he will accept it this time.
