In this day and age, the media never fails to hype just about any young footballer who can make a 5-yard pass, but only a select few actually end up being as good as they are touted to be. In this regard, Riechedly Bazoer is turning out to be one of those youngsters who are gradually turning all the hype into reality, and one hopes he continues his progress. After swapping PSV Eindhoven’s Phillips Stadion for Ajax’s Amsterdam Arena as a fresh-faced 16-year-old, Bazoer has flourished into one of the Oranje’s brightest prospects and PSV’s loss has proved to be Ajax’s gain.
History:
He was born in Utretch, Netherlands and spent his formative years playing in PSV’s youth clubs, till he finally joined Eindhoven in 2006 as a ten-year-old. Bazoer started off as a central defender, but he wanted to play up the pitch as a midfielder but his coaches refused to let him do so. As a result, he refused to sign a new contract and signed for Ajax, one of Netherland’s most historic and successful clubs. Manchester City were also reportedly interested in him, but his parents did not allow him to go overseas.
Playing Style: Strengths
Bazoer has immense versatility, and can slot in any position in the midfield. He thrives on short, cheeky passes and one-twos, but can also provide excellent long rangers. Moreover, his game reading is impeccable, and coupled with an excellent defensive instinct, he has bought in a lot of stability and quality to Frank de Boer’s side ever since his debut in late 2014. His role model is said to be Patrick Vieira and apart from similarities in stature with Bazoer standing at 6ft, his 28 tackles this season – the 7th highest of all teenagers in the Eredivisie this term – would suggest that the 19-year-old is beginning to translate his admiration of Vieira into his own game. Former coach Fons Groendijk said, “I see him as the Patrick Vieira of Ajax,” compliments don’t come much greater. Having scored 2 goals and registered 3 assists this season, this 19-year-old has already shown that he can be very good on the ball, and comparisons are already being made between him and Paul Pogba.
Weakness:
Despite being a good passer, Bazoer lacks the ability to finish, even when he is inside the penalty box. He doesn’t really score a lot of goals, but that is an area which can be improved as time goes on.
Future:
After a successful stint with the Dutch U21 side, he has secured a place for the National team as well. He already has traits that the very best possess, and age is on his side, and with Arsenal, City, and United all tracking his progress, it is more than likely that this new talent will get sufficient opportunity to make his mark in world football.
