Transfer Opinion: Why Manchester United Should Fight With Liverpool For This German Pass Master

Mario Gotze

Questions have been raised this season, and rightly so, about the dearth of goals and even goalscoring opportunities that have been created by Manchester United this season. Van Gaal has failed to develop a consistent forward line, thanks to a combination of injuries, erratic form and his own ” philosophy “. Juan Mata has mostly been used out wide, where he has failed to impress in most of the games. Rooney has scored 14 goals this season, but he still needs support from a world class playmaker. Ander Herrera has flattered to deceive in the no. 10 role, while the likes of Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard are far more effective on the flanks than down the middle. As such, the Red Devils could really do with a proven playmaker, who not only sets up goals but also has a nac of scoring them. Mario Gotze, the 23-year-old German could well be the creative spark we need, and given that he is likely to leave Bayern Munich this season, there is no better time than right now.

Playing Style:

Gotze flourished under Jurgen Klopp for 4 seasons in Dortmund, where he was played down the centre with Lewandoski up front and Reuss on the flank. This trio bought 2 Bundesliga titles to the club, and they thrived in a high pressing, counter-attacking based style which was free flowing and direct. The intensity of the pressing suited Gotze, who like most Germans is technically outstanding. There is a reason why Bayern Munich shelled out 31 million pounds for him in 2013, although his time with the Bavarians has been blighted with injury and being used out of position repeatedly.

Future:

Carlo Ancelotti is going to take over Bayern in the summer, and there is no certain indication if Gotze will be a part of his plans. Pep Guardiola has certainly underused the German pass master, and rumours are surfacing that he is looking to leave the club. If he does leave, Liverpool will most likely be his expected destination because he will have the opportunity to reunite with his old manager Klopp and also finally be utilised in his preferred position.

Fan view:

If Gotze is indeed available., United should definitely approach him.
Mata is inconsistent and Herrera is better off in central midfield, and if Jose Mourinho does take over the managerial post, Gotze will flourish under him as the Portuguese loves having a playmaking genius like him around whom he can set up the team. We have a lot more cash and swagger at our disposal, and I personally would love to see him at Old Trafford, but I doubt if United will ever go after him.
