There has been a lot of talk of Louis Van Gaal leaving and Jose Mourinho replacing him at Old Trafford in the recent times. While the Portuguese guarantees success to any club he goes to, the long term implications are not clear. Louis Van Gaal on the other hand has shown a penchant for developing the youth and promoting them, a trait we most likely will not see from Mourinho.
Guillermo Varela has broken into the first team this season and has done quite well so far whenever he has been called upon. He recently revealed that he came close to leaving the club but Van Gaal was the reason that he stayed back. The player joined United from Penarol in June 2013 and just recently got promoted to first team under the Dutchman.
While a lot of things have gone wrong for Van Gaal this season, youth development is not one of them for sure.
“Because I saw I wouldn’t play, I would have few chances. I spoke to the manager and he told me that no, I couldn’t go, because I was going to play” Varela said in an interview with Sport 890 (via futbol.com.uy).
