With the transfer window shut and no new players in the team one begins to wonder if Louis Van Gaal thinks his team is strong enough. At the beginning of the season United were playing their lackluster football, but were winning most of the game with 1-0 margin. Nowadays, even those are difficult to come by. Except for the 3-1 victory over Derby and tonight’s 3-0 win over Stoke.
So why did Louis Van Gaal not sign any player strengthen his squad in this transfer window?
United let go of several players in the summer and since then have been managing with a meager 23 man squad. Of course we all have heard Louis Van Gaal saying multiple times that he likes players who can play in multiple positions. For example, Daley Blind can play as a defensive midfielder, a left back, a central midfielder and a central defender. Unfortunately, it has confused the United fans as to which is his best position?
Given all the players capable of playing in multiple positions, United would have no trouble in going full season without any signing and a 23 man squad. But currently 7 of them are injured. Now that leaves with only 16 senior players. There have been a few players that rose from the academy such as Brothwick-jackson and Varela and have shown great spirits but in terms of experience they are very green and will take some time to develop into a world class player. Janujaz has come back from Borussia Dortmund and was tested as a right back in the last game. Of course he was disappointing.
Louis Van Gaal needs to figure out if he wants a team of “Jack of all trades” or “Specialists”. Either way, he should have strengthened his squad. But the biggest reason for not signing a player this window is probably that the United board does not believe Louis Van Gaal to be the right man for the club anymore.
