Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has included Hernandez in his preliminary World Cup squad, but has advised the striker to leave Old Trafford in search of regular football.
Despite his lack of playing time this season under David Moyes, Herrera was always going to bring ‘Chicharito’ to Brazil. He has an impressive record with the national team, scoring 35 goals in 57 appearances.
Since the arrival of Robin van Persie from Arsenal, it was obvious that he and Wayne Rooney would be leading the line and Hernandez’ minutes of play would suffer a lot.
According to Squawka, Hernandez has made 24 league appearances this season, however, 75% of those have been from the bench and he has made only six starts.
He shouldn’t hold much hope for more playing time under van Gaal. If the Dutchman does use his 4-3-3 formation, then there is only one forward position and he will be behind van Persie and Rooney once again.
However, this not to say that ‘Chicharito’ is a bad player, there just is not room for him in this system. In my opinion he should definitely look to go abroad after the World Cup.
He is a great penalty area striker, a no.9 would love to play off the shoulder of the last defender and he is deceivingly good in the air.
Teams like Valencia and Inter Milan are in the market for a new striker and they would do well to keep an eye on the Hernandez situation in Manchester.
