Knowing United: How important is the history of the Red Devils?

Most casual football fans, when asked about Manchester United, will only know about our recent triumphs. To them, we probably didn’t exist before Sir Alex Ferguson became manager, which to be fair was over two decades ago. However, the club has such a long history that there’s so much more to remember even before we had even heard of Sir Alex.

The Busby Babes, our first European Cup win in 1968 and our brief spell in the old Second Division in the 1974-75 season all stand out in the memories of more seasoned United fans, forming the basis for many an answer to a pub quiz question. Knowing about all those periods and dates which went on to define the club can prove useful, but why?

United in knowledge

Even the most casual United supporter will at least know the manager’s name, our record signing and perhaps a few club legends, but there’s so much more to the club than that. In taking the how well do you know your team quiz compiled by Ladbrokes, you will need to know quite a few things about the Reds in order to get a good score.

Learning about our origins as Newton Heath when we wore yellow and green shirts, our darkest moments and the dizzying highs of the Sir Alex era can go a long way towards turning yourself into a United superfan. It might mean watching more games live, buying or borrowing a few books, looking up some stats online or perhaps even browsing videos of old games on YouTube!

Beating the neighbours

The aforementioned quiz allows fans to see how their knowledge compares to that of other clubs in the Premier League. This means that United fans can see whether they know more or less about us than Manchester City fans know about their club. Beating the City average score is sure to give you a little pride at least!

Also, beating Liverpool and some of our other rivals is possible. It might also be worth telling your friends to take the quiz, but ask them to do a little revision first if you want to boost our score and push us up the table.
