When Tom Cleverley was progressing through the youth system at Manchester United there was a lot of hope attached to him.
He was labelled by many as a future England captain and was meant to be the natural replacement for Paul Scholes, which now looking back seems ridiculous. After spells with Leicester, Watford and Wigan, Cleverley has now established himself as a first team player up at Old Trafford, but there are a host of football fans, admirers and pundits who believe that the 24-year-old isn’t good enough to warrant that place.
I would agree to a certain extent.
I do think that he is a good player, but for the club challenging where United currently sit – seventh place. The reason he has played so many games is down to luck for me – Paul Scholes on his last leg and then retired, and with United now possessing one of the weakest midfields I can remember in a long time.
In the next two weeks, if I was David Moyes, I would be working overtime to find Cleverley a new club in order to make space for a new signing or two. With Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and Marouane Fellaini currently at the club, United are more than covered in terms of central midfielders who are willing to sit, but need players who are going to go and take the game to opponents.
Cleverley isn’t one to do that, and I think his time should be up at Old Trafford.
