David Moyes showing right qualities so far

So last Friday David Moyes and his Captain gave their first press conference and quite a performance it was, but what did we learn ?

Firstly we have a manager who goes shopping with his wife in jeans and t shirt answers SAF’s calls and drinks tea. I like it.

The fact SAF told him he was to be his replacement is even better, the man listens. The fact he didn’t know SAF was leaving, yet that clown Mourinho says he did, leads me to conclude Moyes is honest too. All good so far.

When pressed after his announcement that Rooney isn’t for sale it became clear how awkward he found it to avoid the truth. He couldn’t confirm Wayne wants to stay, he couldn’t hide the reality that the former boy wonder is seeking to leave and that by making it clear that the club want him to stay then Wayne has to write a transfer request and so prove it was his choice. With United holding his contract that boosts the price and ensures Moyes takes no blame for the departure. A good PR move.

The bid for Leighton Baines also shows Moyes has either watched or listened. Evra was defensively poor last season and Buttner isn’t ready, Fabio was in a relegated team and Young injured a lot. We need more left side threat, Baines is a strong move in attack and defence.

What we didn’t hear was much about midfield. The Thiago saga runs on, latest news is that we can expect news on Wednesday but as Moyes likes 4-5-1 we should expect a defensive midfielder too. The papers are full of striker options but Kagawa, Welbeck, little pea and Van Perfect  are good enough. Jones and Carrick backing up Thiago and Kagawa isn’t enough, Cleverley needs a strong season and Anderson might be lucky enough to get one more chance.

I want to see a pair of midfield signings that are of the quality we need, say Danielle De Rossi or Ya Ya level players, a Viera or a Keane type player. We need that.

But overall a good first week for the new boy, no drama , an ability to speak well and some thought for what we need. I’m looking forward to the season and believe we have the right man for the job in the long term.

The appointments of Giggs and Phil Neville also made me happy, and I can only imagine what training will be like with those 2 setting the fitness levels.

If Phil Neville can get Rooney fit again I’d put money on him finding his form and silencing his critics of which I’ve been one. If not let him go.

Moyes is the future, Wayne has much to prove before that can be said of him.
