When Dimitiar Berbatov trudged on for the last 20 minutes against Swansea City at Old Trafford back in May, it would probably be fair to say that every Manchester Untied fan in attendance would have expected the Bulgarian hitman to have been sold by now.
However with the new Premier League season up and running, strangely he hasn’t been sold on.
Even had United not signed Robin van Persie the writing was on the wall for Berba who after top-scoring in 2010/11 was relegated to fourth choice last season as Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck jumped ahead of him in the pecking order.
Berba has loved playing for United, a club with the stature that his heart desires and one where he has played on the biggest stage in the biggest games in which he has scored some big goals in, none more so than his memorable hat-trick against bitter rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
All through last season Berba spoke about wanting to stay and wanting to fight for his place as he loved playing for the club. Has his love perhaps worked against him?
Surely he doesn’t want to stay and be fifth-choice and pick up his weekly wage of at least £150k when he could be playing elsewhere, scoring goals and doing what every forward loves doing best, playing games regularly, when he Is still good enough to be a first-choice striker elsewhere in Europe.
Of course Berba doesn’t want to sit on the bench and see out the remaining year of his contract. So then, what up until now is putting clubs off buying him.
Is it his age?
Is it his mental-state-of-mind?
Or could United want more money for him than clubs are willing to offer?
I suspect it’s probably none of these and that Berba is more than likely mulling over the offers on his table. With clubs like Galatasaray and Zenit St Petersburg – who can offer Champions League football – rumoured to want Berba, it wouldn’t surprise me if he is indeed looking over his offers trying to pick the best move for him and his family.
Saying that though, it wouldn’t surprise me if a certain club in London were to come calling for his signature…again!
Spurs could do with a forward ASAP to pair up alongside Jermain Defoe. With Harry Kane being the other striker to back-up England’s match-winner against Italy, Andre Villas-Boas certainly is in need of an experienced striker to do the goods and help his side have a good season and more importantly secure Champions League football this season.
Wouldn’t it be a sight to see Berba welcomed back in open arms back at White Hart Lane. Wouldn’t it be somewhat ironic to see the same set of supporters – who booed him when he moved to United in 2008 – sing his name again proudly as he started banging in the goals again in a league that he has loved to have been part of.
It’s a sight United fans wouldn’t begrudge. The chances are though that Emmaneul Adebayor will return to Spurs on transfer-deadline day but there’s nothing wrong with imagining is there?
