Why Gibson’s Worth Taking A Chance On

You may recall around the middle of August, there was an article on our site that looked at Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak focusing on the fact that if they were to leave Old Trafford this summer that I would hope that both players would be able to do so.

Of course we’re now in September and both players will now have to wait until January for permanent moves away from Manchester United. It’s a shame that both players are still at the club as ideally you can imagine that Sir Alex Ferguson would have wanted to move them on before the 11pm deadline on August 31st.

After focusing on Kuszczak in an earlier article today, I would like to draw attention more on Gibson who is a player I (and many United fans) feel really sorry for at the moment. In the past 18 months, he has become in many ways an easy-target for fans to criticize.

Perhaps it’s because he hasn’t developed to the kind of level that was expected of him, or maybe he himself has been a victim of having to compete for a place in our midfield – but whatever the reasons are Gibson got the flack – even when he wasn’t playing!

Whatever you think of him, he worked extremely hard to come through our youth sides to break into our first team and has done really all that can be asked of him. Yes his passing last year was not what it had been beforehand but he had limited opportunities last year and sometimes for young players it only adds more pressure on their shoulders.

In the summer Gibson was linked with a move to Sunderland and seemed on the verge of joining Wes Brown and John O’Shea at the Stadium of Light, until the move broke down due to wage demands. It was a major blow for the Irish midfielder who many fans and those in the media had tipped to flourish this season for Steve Bruce’s side had the move gone through.

There were rumours of reported interest from Steve Kean at Blackburn Rovers and Alex McLeish at Aston Villa in Gibson. However any chance of a move happening were scuppered when the midfielder picked up an ankle injury in training a couple of days before the transfer window shut.

Despite being included in United’s squad for the Champions League group-stages it’s highly unlikely that Gibson will get a game in that competition this season and the cards still say that the midfielder is likely to move on in January.

There would be something wrong in football if no club in the Premier League or in the Championship doesn’t come in for Gibson as he has the ability if given time to become a good first-choice midfielder. Sir Alex would not have kept him at the club if he didn’t think he was a bad player for so long, so the talent is clearly there. Let’s just hope someone gives him the chance to go out there and perform and show his doubters wrong.

What would be the perfect club for Gibson to get his career back on track? Wolves. Mick McCarthy knows exactly what qualities he possesses, having managed him at Molineux throughout the 2007/08 season when he was on loan there. Could this move happen? Yes. Will It Happen? Only time can tell.
