UEFA has published the squad lists for this season’s Champions League group stages and a total of 34 players have been called-up into Manchester United’s squad which was announced on Friday.
United of course will be targeting a fourth final in five years in the competition and will meet Benfica, Basel and Otelul Galati in Group C on the first passage of the road to the competition’s final in Munich next May.
The United squad on UEFA.com includes 10 names on ‘Player list B’ which is for younger squad members – others eligible for this list can be added up to 24 hours before a fixture.
Here’s the squad for the ‘A list’:
Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Anders Lindegaard, Tomasz Kuszczak
Defenders: Patrice Evra, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic
Midfielders: Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Ji-Sung Park, Michael Carrick, Nani, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, Darron Gibson
Forwards: Michael Owen, Dimitar Berbabtov, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Mame Diouf
Here’s the squad for the ‘B list’:
Goalkeepers: Ben Amos, Sam Johnstone
Defenders: Fabio, Rafael, Sean McGinty
Midfielders: Matty James, Davide Petrucci
Forwards: Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Will Keane
There are 2 intresting points as to how UEFA classifies players on the ‘B List’:
1. Each club is entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season.
2. A player may be registered on List B if he is born on/after January 1986 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for an interrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday by the time he is registered with UEFA.
United have a total of 10 players on the ‘B List’ but more can be added up to 24 hours before a fixture, so it’s not beyond the realms of reality that a Paul Pogba or Reece Brown (once he comes back from his loan with Doncaster) could be added to the list, if Sir Alex feels the need to do so.
