It appears that it’s a straight-out fight between Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra as to who will captain Manchester United against Spurs at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Injuries to captain Nemanja Vidic and Ferdinand (who probably would have assumed the captaincy in the Serb’s absence) have left Sir Alex Ferguson the task of naming a stand-in skipper for United’s second league match of the season.
Evra who has captained United before, most memorably in the 2009 Carling Cup victory over Redknapp’s side, is set to return to the side after recovering from a knee injury which forced the French left-back to hobble of during the second half of the Community Shield.
Rooney of course has captained the side a few times with his first appearance as skipper being in United’s 3-0 win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League back in October 2006. He took over the captaincy after Ferdinand hobbled off last Sunday and Sir Alex in the past has spoken about the fact that United’s no.10 has the abilities to become a good future captain:
On the face of it both players would be relied onto lead by example, but due to Evra’s experience and seniority he is surely the favourite to get the job on Monday night, where he will have his work cut out against Spurs’ tricky wingers Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.
