Manchester United have activated a clause in Marouane Fellaini’s contract which will keep the Belgian at the Old Trafford club until 2018 – reports BBC. This came out as a major surprise for the supporters as no one was expecTing this to happen.
With Morgan Schneiderlin heading to Goodison Park, it was supposed that the Belgium international would be the next personnel to head out of the club, but the manager surely had other ideas in his mind. Fellaini was signed from Everton for a reported fee of £27.5m in 2013, and the contract had a clause to extend his stay for another year and the Mancunian club has decided to do so.
Fellaini was a major flop under David Moyes, but he somehow found a footing under the tenure of Louis van Gaal, but that certainly wasn’t enough to please the United spectators. It was thought the 29-year-old would be one of those many players who Mourinho will sell in his first year in charge, but quite surprisingly, the Portuguese tactician has used in one way or another during this season.
Fellaini was heavily booed by the United supporters in their 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, as the towering Belgian gave away a sloppy penalty against his former club -Everton – a week ago, but the fans quite rightly supported the big man in United’s 2-0 win over Hull City – in which, Fellaini came off the bench to score a well-taken goal.
It was an amazing sight to watch as Fellaini ran towards the manager to celebrate his goal. Even though the United supporters are divided on their opinion regarding Fellaini, the manager retained his faith and just after the victory over the Tigers, the manager said:
“He has a very strong mentality. He coped well with the situation and he was not afraid in the next match after Everton to go on to the pitch again.
“I think he played phenomenally against Reading [last weekend] and [against Hull] he scored an important goal for us.
“The dynamic has changed and the empathy from the fans. He is always supported by myself and he knows that he is a very important player for me.”
