Members of the Manchester United coaching staff for the 2022/23 season

Manager: Erik ten Hag

Appointed: 2022 | Nationality: Dutch

Erik ten Hag was appointed manager in the summer of 2022 following the departure of interim boss Ralf Rangnick. The Dutch national spent five successful seasons at Ajax before coming to the Old Trafford dugout.

The 52-year-old spent his playing career in the Netherlands on various sides. After hanging his boots, Ten Hag went into management.

The Dutch national started as a youth team coach at FC Twente before becoming assistant manager at the Enschede-based club and PSV Eindhoven.

Ten Hag’s first job as head coach was with the Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles. He then managed Bayern Munich’s reserve side for a couple of seasons before moving to FC Utrecht. And in 2017, the 52-year-old became manager of the Amsterdam-based club, where he had a fruitful spell.

Assistant Manager: Steve McClaren

Steve McClaren is the most experienced face in the Old Trafford dugout. The 61-year-old has managed various clubs around Europe. The Englishman served as technical director and then advisor of management before reuniting with Ten Hag in Manchester.

McClaren spent some time managing FC Twente and had the new United gaffer as his assistant manager. Their roles have reversed at Old Trafford.

The Englishman has previously been an assistant at United under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1999 and 2001.

Assistant Manager: Mitchell van der Gaag

Appointed: 2022 | Nationality: Dutch

Mitchell van der Gaag joined Ten Hag in the dugout in the 2021/22 season at Ajax. The new United boss decided the bring his right-hand man with him to the Old Trafford dugout.

The 50-year-old had been a manager at various sides before becoming the Ajax U21 head coach. Subsequently, Ten Hag had Van der Gaag work under him at the Amsterdam-based club.

Goalkeeping Coach: Richard Hartis

Appointed: 2019 | Nationality: English

Richard Hartis is the senior goalkeeping coach at United. The Englishman has had a vast career training shot-stoppers.

The 54-year-old was the goalkeeping coach for the Red Devils’ U18 side. He spent almost 10 years in the role. Hartis also became the first-team goalkeeping coach for a season under Ferguson in the 2007/08 campaign.

The Englishman returned to the club under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.

Goalkeeping Coach: Craig Mawson

Appointed: 2019 | Nationality: English

Craig Mawson is the assistant goalkeeping coach at United. The 43-year-old spent his playing career at various EFL clubs.

The Englishman appeared for Morecambe the most when he was a goalkeeper. Mawson spent nine years as a goalkeeping coach for Burnley’s U18 side. The 43-year-old came to United with Hartis.

Strength and Conditioning Coach: Michael Clegg

Appointed: 2019 | Nationality: English

Michael Clegg is the current strength and conditioning coach at United. The 45-year-old began his playing career with the Red Devils’ youth side. He was also part of the first team in Manchester.

Clegg spent time between 1995 and 2002 on United’s book before permanently joining Oldham Athletic. The Englishman spent 13 years as the strength and conditioning coach at Sunderland before joining the Red Devils.

Chief Analyst: Paul Brand

Appointed: 2020 | Nationality: Scottish

Paul Brand is the chief analyst at United. The Scotsman was previously the match analyst between 2013 and 2020.

Brand was the chief analyst previously at Blackburn Rovers between 2009 and 2013.

Individual Coach: Eric Ramsay

Eric Ramsay is the individual coach at United. The 30-year-old focused on set-pieces and technical skills for the side under Ole when appointed in 2021. The Welshman is considered one of the most promising coaches in football.

Ramsay was previously assistant manager at Shrewsbury and then Chelsea’s U23 side before moving to Old Trafford.

Forward Coach: Benni McCarthy

Benni McCarthy became part of the backroom staff after Ten Hag was appointed manager. The South African had a vast playing career. The 44-year-old won the Champions League playing for FC Porto in the 2003/04 season.

The former forward had also played in the Premier League for the likes of Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.

McCarthy also has experience as a manager. The 44-year-old was the manager of Cape Town City AmaZulu FC in South Africa before coming to Manchester.

Such has been his impact that stars like Marcus Rashford have openly praised his coaching skills.

Head of Athletic Performance: Richard Hawkins

Appointed: 2008 | Nationality: Welsh

Richard Hawkins has been the athletic coach at United since 2008. The 51-year-old has previously been the conditioning for the England national team, West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.

Head of Sports Medicine and Science: Steve McNally

Appointed: 2006 | Nationality: English

Steve McNally has been the first-team doctor at the club for a while now. He’s been with the club since Ferguson’s time.

McNally previously worked as a medical official for the Liverpool FC academy and the England national youth football teams.

Head of Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy: Robin Sadler

Appointed: 2021 | Nationality: English

Robin Sadler is the Medical Director of Physiotherapy at United. The 42-year-old has previously spent time at Derby County in the same role.

Sadler was also associated with rivals Manchester City between 2000 and 2016 as their physiotherapist.
