Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is over. Fabrizio Romano confirmed on July 10 that the deal has officially collapsed, with United informing Atalanta they are walking away after changing their transfer plans. The move had been agreed in principle in early June for a base fee of £35 million, rising to £39 million with add-ons, and would have been Michael Carrick’s first signing as United manager.
The Times reported that United had concerns over a knee injury the 27-year-old is carrying, with further medical checks requested. Atalanta responded firmly, insisting Ederson is fully fit and ready to play immediately. Romano’s post on X made the situation plain: United changed their plans and Ederson will not be joining them. Ederson himself had spoken publicly during the World Cup saying the move was almost done and he was focused on Brazil’s campaign. Brazil, who beat Norway in the Round of 16, were eliminated by Argentina at the quarter-final stage.
Atalanta move to offer a new contract as United scramble for alternatives
Rather than wait for another club to come calling, Atalanta are acting swiftly. Per Romano’s Instagram post two hours ago, the Serie A club are set to send Ederson a new five-year contract next week, giving the Brazilian a clear choice: commit long-term in Bergamo or enter the market with ten months left on his current deal.
