Matheus Cunha namedrops Harry Maguire his closest friend at Manchester United
Manchester United had to press on with their plans in the 2025 summer transfer window after finishing 15th in the Premier League in 2024/25. They did not waste any time in signing Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers by paying his release clause of £62.5m.
The 26-year-old had a standout spell for Wolves as he scored 33 goals and provided 15 assists in 92 games across competitions. The Red Devils expected that impact from the Brazilian in the early season. However, Cunha did not perform as expected until he scored his first goal in the 4-2 win against Brighton. After the goal, the Brazilian even expressed that he worked hard for it, and it was a relief to him to finally be on the scoresheet.
With that goal, fans finally started to get behind the former Wolves attacker, and the Brazilian also felt at home at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, in a recent video, the club highlighted Cunha’s daily routine through Premier League footage from the new Carrington facilities, and fans could get a closer look at the Brazilian.

We can see small moments showing how he interacts with the other players, and one of the scenes from the canteen was the highlight. Cunha walked in with a relaxed energy and greeted teammates. The 26-year-old initially spoke about the left-back Luke Shaw, and then shifted the conversation to veteran defender Harry Maguire, calling him his closest friend at Old Trafford.
“This is my real best friend, H [Harry Maguire]. Always treats me like, regular… honest.”
Cunha’s impact so far
Matheus Cunha’s early Manchester United career has highlighted his work rate and technical ability, providing an aggressive press and intelligent link-up play. The Brazilian has displayed maturity and a vibrant personality, which have allowed him to integrate quickly into the squad and serve as an energy source for the team.
While he has demonstrated a knack for being in dangerous positions, converting these opportunities has been a weakness, and he has failed to consistently provide a high goal-scoring output. Cunha’s fitness has also been a concern, evidenced by a hamstring injury that sidelined him in September, interrupting his early-season momentum.
However, with the support that the former Wolves forward is receiving within the camp, we can definitely expect him to fire sooner rather than later. United will face Spurs in the upcoming game, and Cunha will be looking to make amends for the early-season goal scarcity. Even the departed winger Antony praised Cunha and stated that the 26-year-old wanted the right-winger to stay at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian has faced Tottenham four times during his stint with Wolverhampton Wanderers, scored a goal, and won three matches. He would definitely like to build on that with Manchester United, and that might see him firing on all cylinders for the rest of the season.
