Diego León believes it was his destiny to move to Manchester United
Manchester United have always trusted young players to build their future, and Diego León’s recent story fits that tradition. The 18-year-old Paraguayan full-back left his home club Cerro Porteño earlier this year to chase a dream many only imagine. He rose through the club’s youth system and broke into their senior side in 2024. León played 33 matches before Old Trafford called him.
Reports from Paraguay in early 2025 said the Red Devils moved quickly to sign him. After a short wait, he completed his transfer in July. Recently, León spoke to Paraguay’s 1080 AM, as relayed by Sport Witness, and said he first felt afraid to leave South America. The 18-year-old explained that adapting to a new country, language, and culture made him nervous.
Now, he sees the move as destiny and a chance to prove his worth in European football. León admitted that he struggled with early nerves but now feels comfortable in his surroundings. He thanked his teammates and staff for helping him adjust. The young left-back now plays with the youth setup and has featured for Manchester United’s U21s in a few competitive fixtures.
León already carries international experience after making his first appearance for Paraguay this month while waiting for his senior debut. His growing confidence shows that he wants to learn and improve with every challenge. Meanwhile, we reported earlier that Diego León is growing steadily at Manchester United as the club takes a patient approach to his development.
“When they told me about coming to England, I was afraid. The language and other things, but luckily, I’ve adapted now.”
“I was so happy to be called up to the national team. It’s hard to grasp everything that’s happened to me in these two years.”
“I only wanted to play for the Cerro’s reserves, but God had better plans for me.”
A project built for the long term

Ruben Amorim is planning to build a squad for United’s future, and the club did take the right step with the signing of León. The Portuguese manager wants talented young players with a lot of potential in the squad. The club felt that the Paraguayan left-back can shine in that position with his pace, aggression and attacking instincts. Despite the Paraguayan player’s inexperience, Amorim believes the teenager’s athleticism and strong mentality will grow with time. United are now focused on helping him adapt to English football through academy matches and first-team training sessions.
There is a strong chance of a loan move away from the club in January 2026. A Championship club might offer the 18-year-old regular playing time to grow, and also adjust to the needs of the Premier League. The club has already shortlisted him as one of the main pillars of the future team that they want to build, and also to replenish the quality of the left-back spot. The Paraguayan is good with attacking traits and makes those forward runs, which augurs well for Amorim, who uses wing-backs in his system.
Meanwhile, United are eyeing a January loan for Real Madrid striker Endrick. That update shows how Amorim’s transfer plan focuses on developing young players with big potential. León’s path, though still at an early stage, already reflects that mindset. It builds on patience, belief, and steady progress. Over time, his fearless attitude and athletic frame could turn him into one of the most exciting full-backs to rise at Old Trafford in years.
