Kobbie Mainoo not short of suitors as Manchester United future remains unclear
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been struggling to accumulate minutes under his belt at M16. The Man Utd academy graduate has fallen down in the pecking orders in the middle of the park under Ruben Amorim.
There were rumours flying around about his possible exit in the last summer transfer window, but no transfer came through (despite the Portuguese head coach’s openness to sell Mainoo), with Sir Jim Ratcliffe vetoing his stay at Carrington given his highly rated abilities. There were reports about Mainoo taking off the field measures to try and push his way through into the lineup at Old Trafford.
Amorim finally has a stable midfield?
Manchester Reds have had this recent uptick in form given the back-to-back wins in the English top tier. And this has bought Amorim some breathing room. The Portuguese head coach has preferred a midfield line‑up of Casemiro alongside Bruno Fernandes. Both of them played in that 2‑1 win at Anfield, where Casemiro made three tackles (joint‑second highest in the game), while Fernandes supplied the assist for Harry Maguire’s late winner.
Meanwhile, Mainoo has continued to struggle for minutes. Despite being praised by Amorim as a “top player” once, the England international is yet to make a Premier League start this season. And even from the bench his game time is minimal. And this has pushed him to consider options beyond M16.
Mainoo is not short of suitors
Mainoo is weighing up options for a loan move in January. There have been growing concerns about his possible prospects to represent the Three Lions in the 2026 World Cup. And this may push him to go to a place where he gets enough minutes to prove his credentials. And four clubs have been interested in securing his signature this winter.
According to talkSPORT, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Brentford have all been open to the idea of signing Mainoo when the January window comes around.
United are reportedly looking for midfield upgrades. And letting Mainoo go without signing someone would be risky. Yet at the time of writing, the doors appear to be open, with United having identified potential replacement profiles. This does signal that a possible Mainoo departure may be allowed if squad balance comes through.
