Manchester United legend namedrops the manager he would like to see at Old Trafford

Roy Keane is one of the most iconic and influential players in Manchester United’s storied history. Known for his relentless drive, uncompromising tackling, and leadership, he was the heartbeat of United’s success during their dominant years in the 1990s and early 2000s.

But it was not just Keane’s footballing ability that made him such an integral part of Manchester United’s legacy; it was his mentality and fierce competitive spirit. His role as captain, which he held for much of his time at Old Trafford, saw him push his teammates to perform at the highest level.

He is exactly the kind of footballer the current Man Utd squad is lacking. The Red Devils need a Keane-esque personality in the dressing room that can galvanize everyone and get behind Ruben Amorim. This is a key factor in determining the success of a team on the football pitch.

Fancy Simeone, Manchester United fans?

Atletico Madrid have several injury concerns ahead of Manchester United clash.

Keane has been doing the talking recently, and speaking on The Overlap, as quoted by Caught Offside, the Man Utd legend was asked about a manager he would like to see at Old Trafford. Here is what he said:

“I’ve said it for years… I’d like to see Diego Simeone going there. I think he’d create havoc, but good havoc. I’d like to see his personality and his track record. They beat Real Madrid, they scored five… yes, he likes his teams a bit defensive, but they have that fighting spirit. I like a big personality.”

If you had to draw a managerial parallel to the kind of player Keane was, you would narrow it down to Simeone. The Argentinian tactician has been a charismatic figure in Madrid for more than a decade now, and the mentality that he brings to games is quite frightening.

Although Roy Keane did make it clear that he didn’t mind the idea of giving Amorim a long rope, he could not hide his admiration for Simeone. That said, the two managers are polar opposites in terms of how they see their team play on the pitch, and the Portuguese tactician seems to have some fixed ideas on how he can help Man Utd’s resurgence.

Massive vote of confidence

It has almost been a year since Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford, and despite the results, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has assured fans that he isn’t going anywhere. This is a massive statement of confidence from the owners that allows the fans to really get behind the manager.

Simeone is not coming to Manchester any time soon, unless it is with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Thus, it’s time to support the manager that we have and hope that he has what it takes to bring the best out of the squad at his disposal.
