Manchester United focused almost exclusively on signing attackers in the summer transfer window, bringing in three top talents. Only on deadline day did the Red Devils focus on a different position, bringing in a new goalkeeper.
This meant, however, that the defence and midfield remained untouched from last season. Despite players like Lindelof and Evans leaving, Man Utd did not bring in replacements at centre-back.
Amorim’s system needs three top-quality centre-backs available for every game, and Man Utd have a decent roster. Matthijs de Ligt is undoubtedly a star and the only fixed name in the back line, with the likes of Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire rounding off the Portuguese tactician’s options.
Manchester United plotting Bayern raid

Now, as per German outlet BILD (h/t Caught Offside), Manchester United are among the top European clubs interested in signing Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano. The French centre-back is in the final year of his contract with the Bavarian giants.
Bayern have been in negotiations with the player’s camp over a new deal for quite some time, but although the two parties have agreed on a base salary, differences regarding the signing bonus are complicating matters.
This has piqued interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool, who, along with Man Utd, are looking to take advantage of this market opportunity. The clubs could either attempt to sign him in January or get him on a free transfer in the summer.
A modern centre-back
Upamecano is the perfect example of a modern centre-back. His physicality helps him meet the traditional demands of the position, but he is also excellent on the ball and can break lines of pressure with his passing and dribbling.
Having been a mainstay in Bayern’s back line for the past few seasons, it would be a shame to see the German club part ways with the Frenchman this summer. That said, this could prove an advantage for Manchester United.
Ultimately, it could all come down to Man Utd’s competitive standing at the end of the season. If they qualify for the Champions League next season, it would help them attract talent like Upamecano, and we will have to wait and see whether the Red Devils are able to convince the Frenchman to join them this summer.
