Dean Jones claims Manchester United want more competition for the goalkeeping spot
Manchester United’s season took a surprising turn even before the first international break. The club started the summer confident that their goalkeeping situation was stable. However, they suffered a poor run of results, and the situation changed quickly. Andre Onana, who many thought would keep his place despite an early injury, lost form and focus. His costly mistake in the Carabao Cup ended any remaining patience, and that error pushed him out of the team. Soon after, he joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, and his exit forced United to search for stability in goal.
Altay Bayindir began the season as first choice but failed to convince the staff that he could hold the position long term. As the transfer window neared its close, Manchester United signed Senne Lammens, a 23-year-old from Royal Antwerp, for £18.2 million. Lammens joined on deadline day and gave supporters fresh hope.
He kept a clean sheet on his debut against Sunderland and lifted the team’s spirits. Meanwhile, TEAMtalk reported that the club still planned to strengthen their options. Dean Jones revealed that United intends to sign another goalkeeper in 2026. This plan reveals that the club wants to maintain strong competition in that position. Interestingly, reports linked United with a future move for Emiliano Martinez. This link suggests the club wants both depth and proven experience in goal.
“Lammens is not the guaranteed first-choice goalkeeper for the long run – but he has given himself a chance of being No.1 for the next game. And that’s all he can hope for and focus on right now. United seem adamant they are not going to commit to a first-choice stopper, because they want a genuine battle for the shirt on a week-to-week basis.
“It felt like the decision to give Lammens his chance was overdue, and he did well this weekend, so I personally think he has given himself the edge when it comes to starting against Liverpool after the international break. But there is no way I would say he’s now going to establish himself as the first choice because I do believe Bayindir will still get games, and I also think United are still on the lookout for another goalkeeper.
“I’m pretty sure a new goalkeeper will arrive by the summer – and may even arrive in January if they can find a good option. Again, this is about competition and strength in depth. Lammens knows the club rate him long-term, but he is also aware that he is going to have to play very well consistently to keep the shirt.”
Why Manchester United Need Experience Behind Lammens?

Lammens has started well, but his story is still developing. The Belgian indeed has talent, though talent alone rarely sustains success in the Premier League. One clean sheet cannot remove the challenges ahead. Tougher fixtures will soon test his composure and judgement. If United depend only on him, then they would risk their hopes of winning major honours.
Altay Bayindir remains in the squad, but his earlier performances failed to build confidence. The team needs experience if it wants to compete for trophies. If the club signs a senior goalkeeper, then he can guide Lammens and steady the defence in tense moments. Healthy competition will push both players to perform and stop anyone from feeling secure without earning it. Manchester United must rebuild their goalkeeping unit by balancing youth with experience. They need to match ambition with patience and mix development with results. Amid these changes, Napoli’s interest in signing Rasmus Højlund permanently adds another layer to a club managing several key decisions that will shape its future. However, it is quite clear that the club will either want to get Emiliano Martinez or Mike Maignan to compete with the Belgian.
