Manchester United could bring in an experienced goalkeeper in January to compete with Senne Lammens
Manchester United’s goalkeeping setup has gone through several changes this season. The constant shifts have made fans wonder who truly owns the number one spot. The club has spent the past few months trying to find balance after several uncertain performances in goal. Andre Onana moved on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor, and left a gap that United still need to fix. His mistakes last season broke trust, and the management sent him out on loan.
Altay Bayındır began the campaign as the main goalkeeper. However, after six league matches and eleven goals conceded, he lost his place. The 3-1 defeat to Brentford pushed manager Ruben Amorim to make a change. Then came Senne Lammens, a younger face, who made his debut with a clean sheet in the 2-0 win against Sunderland. His early display brought a sense of promise the team needed.
Inside Track journalist Pete O’Rourke said Lammens seems part of a longer plan. He represents a goalkeeper that the club wants to develop for the future. Amorim, however, wants stability right now. He looks for an experienced goalkeeper to bring confidence to the defence.
“Lammens is probably a long-term signing, still young and obviously has a lot to prove if he is to become Manchester United’s number one in the future. Bayindir is number one right now for Amorim, and then Lammens is number two after obviously letting Onana leave the club on loan.
“They have issues between the sticks and have kept just one clean sheet this season. If their goalkeeping issues continue, it’s something they will look at in January and again in the summer. Amorim wants an experienced goalkeeper who can make the spot his own and bring stability and confidence to the defence.”
Reports from The Mirror and ESPN say Manchester United are targeting Mike Maignan and Emiliano Martínez, two proven goalkeepers. Maignan’s contract with AC Milan ends in 2026, which could allow United to sign him next summer. Martínez nearly joined during the last window, but the move collapsed at the end. The club’s direction now reflects a mix of fixing current problems and preparing for the future. They have struggled to manage that balance for a long time.
Amorim’s Dilemma and What Comes Next?

Amorim faces a real challenge with timing. He knows experience can save points, but patience can help build the next leader in goal. Lammens displayed composure early on, though one clean sheet does not define his future. O’Rourke believes that if the defence keeps struggling through winter, Amorim will go back to the market in January.
He will search for a goalkeeper who steadies the team during tough moments. The manager’s choice will shape the rest of this season and guide the club’s rebuild. However, the likely options for experienced goalkeepers are Martinez and Maignan. The Frenchman will be a solid transfer for free, but United’s most realistic bet will likely be Emiliano Martinez.
Other stories continue to unfold at Old Trafford. Manchester United were warned off making a move for Frenkie de Jong, while Ruben Amorim responded to Mason Mount’s backing after Manchester United’s win against Sunderland. Both stories add fresh angles to an already eventful season. Every move and rumour adds to the larger picture of a club still trying to rediscover its rhythm. The next transfer windows may finally show how Manchester United solve the question that has followed them all season — who can truly guard their goal with authority.
