According to the Italian outlet, Piero Ausilio called Højlund directly to tell him negotiations with Manchester United would end. Inter saw qualities in Esposito and believed he could succeed at the top level. This direct rejection showed how quickly opportunities can disappear at the highest level.
As per CM, the Italian told the striker: “Forgive us, but we’re suspending all negotiations with Manchester United because we’ve seen the right qualities in one of our players that drives us to believe in him.”
Why might Napoli be the right fit?
Napoli included an obligation to buy if they qualify for the Champions League. This move matters for both Højlund and the club. After struggling for rhythm at Old Trafford, he now finds himself in a system built by Antonio Conte, who prefers pace, directness and clever movement in attack.
The 22-year-old striker already excelled in Serie A with Atalanta, so he knows the tactical demands. He looks suited to this environment, especially with Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay providing early passes into space. The Dane scored on his debut against Fiorentina and proved that he can fit into Napoli’s attacking structure.
If Napoli make his stay permanent, United would secure £38 million. ESPN said this could ease debt concerns, and the BBC reported the debt has passed £1 billion. United could reinvest these funds to strengthen key areas of the squad. Meanwhile, reports revealed that Manchester United could revisit a January 2026 move for Carlos Baleba.
