Manchester United could make surprise move in 2026 despite £18.2m summer transfer

Manchester United could make a move for another goalkeeper in 2026 despite Senne Lammens aquisition

Manchester United have been dealing with a goalkeeping situation for a while now. And while many expected that the situation would settle a bit after the recently concluded summer window, it refuses to sort out.

Now there have been reports (via. Football Insider) claiming that the Premier League heavyweights could again dip into the market for a new #1 in 2026.

Senne Lammens not enough?

Manchester United could make a move for another goalkeeper in 2026 despite Senne Lammens aquisition.
Manchester United sealed deal for Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens on Deadline Day.

We saw United acting up on deadline day to bring in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in an £18.2m transfer. And while he is expected to be the long-term solution between the sticks at M16, Ruben Amorim refuses to hand him his opportunities. The Portuguese head coach has cast doubts over the Belgian’s abilities as #1 at Old Trafford.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager recently admitted that his side “don’t currently have a No. 1 goalkeeper.” A public statement like this shows that behind the scenes there is a sense of intent to bring in another leading GK.

That aforementioned statement also puts Altay Bayindir’s future at M16 in a bit of doubt. The Turkish international has had a rollercoaster of a season. At times, he has shown some good abilities with his reflexes and ball at his feet, but then we also saw him fumble a few easy opportunities from dead ball situations. And if United do end up signing a new keeper, he does risk falling to third choice in the pecking order.

It’s his inconsistency that serves as an alarm to many United supporters (and maybe to Amorim as well).

Ruben Amorim is under huge pressure at Manchester United, will he compound that with a new keeper?

The PL giants have been pushed into this goalkeeping dominoes with the failing form of Andre Onana. The former Ajax star left for Trabzonspor on loan in the recently concluded summer window. And singing Lammens pointed towards a sense of stability. But that hasn’t been the case.

We saw reports of United discussing possible moves with the camp of Mike Maignan. While his current employers value him highly, the fact that his representatives also manage Bryan Mbeumo means United could leverage that relationship into securing his signature.

The decision-makers at Carrington could also revisit a possible move for Emi Martinez after deciding against moving for his signature a few weeks back.

This candid evaluation of the problems from Amorim is another show of cards about how brutal he can be. But the more important question would be about whether United will not support Lammens to develop his potential into the role (for which they signed him), or will the Manchester Reds try to bring in another keeper like Maignan or Martinez to solidify the position?
