Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Francisco Trincao
Manchester United started their mission to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window of 2025 after some disastrous results last season. Ruben Amorim wanted to strengthen his team’s attacking department, and the board supported him with money. The Red Devils signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million.
United then went on to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for £71 million, who was in fine form last season with 20 goals for the Bees in the Premier League. United added the cherry on top by signing the Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko for a whopping £73.7 million from RB Leipzig. The club made a statement with all these signings. Meanwhile, reports also reveal that United are also targeting Ruben Neves in January, and hence, it proves that the club will not be stopping.
More dynamism in the attack
However, we have the latest news from Fichajes which should surprise United fans. Despite strengthening the attack with three big-money signings, the report reveals that United are monitoring the Portuguese winger of Sporting CP, Francisco Trincao. The 25-year-old has performed really well in Portugal, as he has scored 39 goals and provided 34 assists in 161 matches so far.

The former Barcelona man has clearly impressed clubs and fans with his solid performances. Amorim knows him well and hence is probably trusting him to deliver at Old Trafford. However, despite three high-profile signings, they are still in deep waters in 14th place in the Premier League points table at the start of the season, with just one win in four games. In the middle of all this, it has also emerged that Casemiro wants to leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season. So, a lot is happening at Manchester United currently.
Opinion: Do United Really Need Trincao?
We can understand why Amorim would want a player like the Portuguese winger, but the logic still does not convince me. The club has already added Cunha and Mbeumo to the roster for big money. They are experienced players in the Premier League and can play in different positions. Amorim might not be trusting Sesko at the moment, but he is still United’s future. The club has really spent a significant amount of budget on attack, and hence spending on a winger, while not investing in a quality midfielder, will be catastrophic for Amorim’s side. Bringing Trincao into this mix feels more like a luxury than a necessity.
His record at Sporting under Amorim deserves respect, yet the Premier League experience he had at Wolves in the 2021-2022 season was underwhelming. With only two goals and one assist in 28 appearances, he struggled against the league’s pace and physical nature. At Old Trafford, the expectations are higher, the scrutiny sharper, and the pressure relentless. A second attempt might go differently, especially under a manager who knows how to use him, but the risk remains clear.
We do agree that the Portuguese winger can help United in terms of squad depth, but the club’s focus should be on signing a defensive midfielder at this moment, along with a quality centre-back. However, if Amorim still insists on Trincao, the board might be willing to listen, but we aren’t convinced of his possible usage at Old Trafford.
