Manchester United veteran ready to call it quits at Old Trafford; one last dance?

Casemiro wants to leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the season

Manchester United started off a new project under Ruben Amorim this summer. The club brought in names like Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Senne Lammens. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford, Antony, Andre Onana, Jadon Sancho, Victor Lindelof, and Christian Eriksen left the club. However, United have still struggled to get going, as they have registered just one win in the five matches that they have played in all competitions so far.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils signed Casemiro from Manchester United for an initial fee of £60 million, potentially rising to £70 million with add-ons in August 2022. He was one of the best defensive midfielders during his time with Los Blancos. However, the Brazilian is now 33 years old and is way past his prime. Moreover, his contract at Old Trafford ends next summer, and there are rumours about his future in the market.

One last hurrah?

Trivela reports that Casemiro is looking to end his stay at Manchester United when his contract expires in 2026. He will be able to negotiate with other clubs right from January 2026, and the report reveals that the Brazilian will be willing to take such a step. Although his contract does have a clause to extend it by a year, it still requires consent from both parties.

The report also states that the 33-year-old does not want to extend the contract and wants to find a new opportunity. The Brazilian is no more at the peak of his abilities, but is still an integral part of the 3-4-2-1 system of Amorim as a defensive midfielder. The club has no options right now, and they are looking for a new defensive midfielder in the market.

Manchester United should not have any issue in letting Casemiro leave

As stated earlier, the club wants new options in that role, and hence should have no problem in letting Casemiro leave next summer. His effect is slowly diminishing, and United are conceding consistent goals due to his lack of pace and energy to cover ground. Amorim and the club need a young upgrade in that position, and that is why they have been looking at Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton.

United did try out a move for both these players, but failed due to that high price tag. However, they might be in a better position to secure any of them next summer. Baleba wants to move to United, while they face competition from the likes of Real Madrid for Wharton.

During his time at United, Casemiro has been a vital tactical asset, offering a much-needed defensive presence as a deep-lying midfield shield. He excels at breaking up play, winning aerial duels, and providing crucial protection for the defence, particularly when full-backs push forward. The Brazilian’s presence enabled creative players like Bruno Fernandes to operate with greater freedom. However, the physical demands of the Premier League are now proving challenging and are limiting his overall impact.
