Manchester United agree deal for defensive star; deadline day addition on the cards

Manchester United have finally reached an agreement to sign Senne Lammens

Manchester United’s goalkeeper crisis has long been a headache for the club. After letting David de Gea go, it seemed the team was heading towards a new era, but things have turned out to be the opposite of what was expected. Andre Onana made some good saves at times, but his mistakes cost him in big moments.

Then Altay Bayindir got his chance, but he, too, did not inspire confidence in the early games this season, and some mistakes further soured the atmosphere. This insecurity in front of the defence makes the whole team feel uneasy. Every time the ball comes near the box, we are nervous.

New move and Senne Lammens news:

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper throughout this summer. Now David Ornstein‘s report has added to the buzz. According to The Athletic, Manchester United have reached a full agreement to sign 23-year-old goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The deal is worth around €21m, including add-ons.

Manchester United have finally reached an agreement to sign Senne Lammens .
Manchester United seal €21m deal for Royal Antwerp keeper Senne Lammens on Deadline Day.

With a five-year contract now signed, the Belgian international is set to move to Manchester. The club has been working on the deal for a long time and finally completed it on transfer deadline day. The news comes after we had earlier reported that Emiliano Martinez was also a potential option, but the management eventually decided to go the youth route. The move makes it clear that the club has made this investment with the long-term future in mind.

Good move?

The question now arises as to what Lammens can offer United. From what we have seen of him, he has excellent shot-stopping ability, and he is very calm in goal. The 23-year-old’s ability to be good with both feet makes him fit into the modern goalkeeping system. Looking at Ruben Amorim’s tactics, he often plays with three defenders and prefers possession-based football. In such a situation, it will be important for Lammens to work on his distribution and passing.

If he continues to improve in this, then he can become an important part of Amorim’s plans. However, the intensity and pressure of the Premier League is much greater than the Belgian Pro League, so experience is an issue. Emiliano Martinez’s name keeps coming up here because he has not only proven himself in the Premier League but also won the World Cup with Argentina. In comparison, Lammens is a beginner and has a lot to learn.

Still, the deal is a smart move. €21m is not a lot for an experienced player, and Lammens’ arrival at this age indicates that the club wants to develop him for the long term. The lack of experience is certainly a risk, but the club needs to get rid of the constant instability now. Amorim recently backed the goalkeepers against Burnley and said that it is important to keep the trust. But the real solution will only be found when there is stability on the pitch and in the team.

From a United fan’s point of view, the move is promising. The club has repeatedly lost points due to small mistakes; now they need someone who can instill confidence in the whole box. Lammens has this chance, and if he seizes it correctly, perhaps the long-term crisis will finally be over.
