Paul Robinson urges Leeds United to sign Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo
Kobbie Mainoo has remained under the scanner through the ongoing summer transfer window. The talented midfielder was part of 25 Premier League matches last season, and things got even more difficult after Amorim’s arrival. Mainoo has been part of the starting lineup of the team just 16 times out of the 45 matches since November 2024. In the ongoing season, he did not receive a single minute in the first two Premier League matches of the season and came on as an injury substitute to Mason Mount against Burnley in the third Premier League game.
Playing the full 90 minutes against Grimsby in the EFL Cup did not change his situation. Now, Mainoo is feeling under pressure as the World Cup is approaching and playing time is very important for him. This has led to talks about his future in the transfer market.
Robinson’s view and Leeds United’s interest:
MOT Leeds News reported that Leeds United are trying to sign Mainoo, and Paul Robinson has given his thoughts on this. The former Leeds United goalkeeper believed it would be a big message if the Whites brought him in, but he made it clear the clubs’ long-standing rivalry would not make a deal easy.
He pointed out that the relationship between United and Leeds is so tight that any transfer could be met with anger from fans on both sides. Robinson said there have been varying reports about Mainoo; sometimes saying he would sign a new contract, then saying he was thinking of leaving the club, and then it emerged that he was working hard and focusing on United. From Leeds’ perspective, the Englishman could add quality and options in midfield, especially with Ampadu struggling with injury. However, the 45-year-old feels a deal is unlikely, and a number of factors could prevent a transfer.

What’s next?
Mainoo’s situation is making United fans anxious. Everton have already shown interest in him, and now Leeds’ name being linked is even more complicated. Napoli are already interested, and the question now is which direction United will take. On the other hand, there are reports that the club is looking at Morten Hjulmand as a potential replacement. However, in our opinion, it would be risky to let Mainoo go so soon.
He is a very special talent from the academy and showed in 2023/24 how he can change the tempo in midfield. If Amorim gives the 20-year-old consistent opportunities in the double pivot, he could bring balance and add quality to the midfield. The Englishman could certainly make an immediate impact if he moved to a team like Leeds, but it is not certain that he will get consistent game time there as well.
United need to take the long view here. There is not much time left before the transfer window closes, and it is difficult to find a replacement so soon. So sending him away at this moment would not be wise. The club will have to change the way they manage him because if Mainoo does not get game time, he will be forced to move on. We are of the opinion that United should give him trust, give him space on the pitch and plan the midfield around him. If this doesn’t happen, the club will lose an important star of the future.
