Grimsby Town take a cheeky dig at Manchester United and Ruben Amorim on social media
Manchester United’s season has been a roller coaster of highs and lows. A loss against Arsenal, followed by a draw against Fulham and a loss to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, shook the atmosphere in the team badly. The pressure on Ruben Amorim kept mounting, and criticism started to echo from all sides.
However, the win against Burnley brought some relief, and Amorim also described this victory as an emotional moment. He admitted that the team desperately needed this result to keep the hope of saving the season alive. The question now is whether this victory will be a turning point or merely a momentary relief.
A big blow from Grimsby:
The game against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup was nothing less than a nightmare. The fourth-division team took a 2-0 lead over United in the first 15 minutes. Goals from Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo brought the match to 2-2 and took the match to penalties.
But we broke down in the penalty shootout and eventually lost 12-11. This result was embarrassing for the club, and even Louis Saha strongly criticised the team and especially Andre Onana.
Grimsby’s sarcasm:
Four days later, Grimsby mocked Manchester United and Amorim on their social media account and presented their lineup through a tactics board and a magnet. Amorim was seen rotating a magnet on the board in a similar way on Sky Sports. Grimsby tried to show through this joke how their fourth division team defeated a Premier League giant. Their media team said in the video that there are four changes in our team for today’s League Two match, the same team that defeated United in penalties. This was a direct target of United and Amorim.
Opinion:
This whole episode has been a considerable blow to the club. The pain of defeat is one thing, but being openly mocked on social media by a League Two club is far more humiliating. On the one hand, Grimsby’s courage and banter make one think that this is the nature of football; small clubs will do this to commemorate their historic victory.
But on the other hand, it is a reminder of how low United have fallen, where small clubs not only beat us but make us a joke. It clearly shows that Amorim’s team still lacks confidence and unity. The win over Burnley was important in the sense that it at least gave relief to the players.
Amorim’s emotional acknowledgment of the victory’s importance suggests it could be a turning point. This public mockery from Grimsby could, however, serve as a wake-up call for the team.
