Rasmus Hojlund opens the door for Manchester United exit; Serie A calling

Out-of-favour Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund showing interest in joining AC Milan on loan this summer

Manchester United are trying to move on some of their unwanted players in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have already brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko for significant fees this summer, upgrading their forward department ahead of the 2025/26 season. They royally struggled to score goals last term, netting only 44 times in 38 Premier League games. It was easy to identify where the team’s main issue lied for Ruben Amorim, and INEOS have done a great job to deliver him the targets.

It is apparent that sales would now be needed in order for the Mancunian heavyweights to make further additions, preferably a No.6 and goalkeeper. After making three attacking signings, Ruben Amorim has decided to offload Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

Sesko’s addition has put the future of Rasmus Hojlund into jeopardy. Having arrived from Atalanta in the summer for big fee, Hojlund has struggled to pull up trees in Manchester. Out of the 44 league goals Manchester United scored last term, only four were scored by the Danish centre-forward, which forced the club to enter the transfer market for a new No.9.

Deemed surplus to requirements by Amorim, it seems almost inevitable that Hojlund will be on the move this summer – whether that be a permanent or a temporary move. The 22-year-old has been eager to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place, but the Red Devils are trying to nudge him towards the exit door.

AC Milan are looking at signing the Denmark international on a loan deal, although the player has not been keen on a move back to Serie A thus far. However, things are changing now.

According to credible journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, Hojlund is ‘opening doors’ to a move to AC Milan. Talks are ongoing on the player side to discuss the Italian club’s project under new boss Max Allegri. The Rossoneri will pay a €6m loan fee and cover his full salary, whilst also having the option to make the player’s move permanent for €45m.

End of the Dane’s time at Old Trafford?

Hojlund’s performances were lacklustre throughout last season. The 22-year-old was not good at hold-up and link-up play, often ending up wrestling with opposition’s defenders. He was not clinical enough in the box when the chances fell to him, much to the frustration of his teammates and Amorim.

Having signed a new No.9 in Sesko, the ex-Atalanta man’s time at our club unfortunately looks to be up. The hope and excitement with which United signed him in 2023 has now been shattered. Hojlund alone is not at fault, you have to also blame the forwards around him for their selfish attitude and lack of ability to find the Dane in the box.

Hojlund also probably needs a new environment, where he can play without pressure and reignite his career. And Milan could be an ideal destination for the Scandinavian star to unlock his true potential. Therefore, the 22-year-old opening doors to a move back to Serie A should be beneficial for him.
