RB Leipzig are interested in Manchester United player Rasmus Hojlund amidst Benjamin Sesko move
The 2024/25 season was nothing short of a nightmare for Manchester United. Finishing 15th in the Premier League and then losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, it all became an unbearable reality. The appointment of Ruben Amorim raised some hopes, but by the time he arrived, the damage was too deep. Now, United will not play in any European competition next season.
Given the team’s declining reputation over the last two years, it has become necessary to make some concrete decisions. The club have started this summer on a fast note. Two big names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have already arrived at Old Trafford. Also, young Diogo Leon has been taken as an investment for the future. However, the real concern remains the same—the striker. Neither Rasmus Hojlund did anything special, nor Joshua Zirkzee raised any hopes. United need a striker who can turn the match around.
An exchange on the cards?
Now, a name has come to the fore, Benjamin Sesko. This young striker from RB Leipzig has been on United’s radar for a long time. According to a report in The Athletic, via Metro, Leipzig themselves are showing interest in Hojlund, and talks on a player-plus-cash deal may be possible. Initially, Leipzig had priced Sesko at €100m, but now they have bowed down to around £70m.
Talking about Sesko, this boy is a complete package in height, speed and decisive abilities. The Slovenian stays calm inside the box and can get onto long passes well. His performances in Leipzig have made it clear he is ready for the big stage. Plus, the 22-year-old’s age and fitness make him a long-term project. Given Hojlund’s struggles, this upgrade is obvious.
Why is this deal important for United?
There appears to be a clear strategy behind this potential deal. If Hojlund commits to Leipzig and Sesko heads to Manchester United, both clubs stand to gain. United would secure a striker ready to make an immediate impact, while Leipzig get a younger talent they can mould in their own style.
Hojlund arrived with high expectations, but he has struggled to adapt to the demands and intensity of the Premier League. At this stage, United need forwards who can both create and convert chances, qualities Sesko certainly possesses. If the deal is completed for under £70 million, it could turn out to be one of the shrewdest moves of the transfer window.
That said, we have to be realistic about Hojlund’s current market value. His inconsistency means he’s unlikely to command a massive fee on his own. As a result, United may have to include a substantial cash component in the deal. However, if Leipzig are genuinely interested in the Dane, it makes sense for United to push ahead, especially given the limited interest the Dane is generating elsewhere.
Now, it’s all about making the right call. United can’t afford to repeat past transfer missteps. This could be a turning point, if handled wisely.
