Manchester United have had a long tradition of talented goalkeepers guarding the posts at Old Trafford. The latest to belong to that legacy was Spanish shot-stopper David de Gea, who enjoyed an excellent stint at the club, often emerging as the lone saviour during dark times.
Considering all that he had done for the club, the Fiorentina shot-stopper was let go off in rather unceremonious fashion and the club has suffered from its aftermath ever since. Man Utd brought in Andre Onana from Inter Milan who has struggled to get going in England.
The Cameroonian international came to Old Trafford after an excellent season with the Serie A giants, where his heroics led them to the Champions League final that season. However, the ex-Ajax man has been a pale shadow of his former imperious self and failed to win Ruben Amorim’s trust.
Man Utd have Andriy Lunin on the shortlist
Even as the club continue to be on the lookout for a new number one, as per Caught Offside, Andriy Lunin, who is on Man Utd’s shortlist, is unlikely to be available this summer. Newcastle United recently made an offer for the Ukrainian international which Los Blancos turned down.
The Magpies made a €3m loan offer for Xabi Alonso’s reserve goalkeeper but Real Madrid have made it categorically clear that the player is not available for sale. He has been in Spain’s capital for a few years now and has played whenever Thibaut Courtois has missed through injury.
The 26-year-old is content staying as a Los Merengues player despite interest from Premier League clubs. At the moment, Man Utd are not actively looking to sign the La Liga goalkeeper but are rather in the background, even as Newcastle attempted to take him to St. James Park.
Onana is out injured

While Manchester United most certainly need a new goalkeeper, especially with Onana out injured with a torn hamstring, Lunin is not the solution. The club needs a more reliable presence who can command a place inbetween the posts and someone with more experience could help.
It remains to be seen if the Red Devils push to sign Lunin this summer, although that would be highly unlikely. The next few days should provide a clearer picture of which goalkeeper Man Utd focus on, and let’s wait and see how things play out.
