Newcastle United set to break Manchester United hearts by making €72m offer

Manchester United have been interested in Benjamin Sesko, but Newcastle United are set to break their heart

If anyone was told at the end of the 2024/25 season that Manchester United would finish 15th in the Premier League, probably no one would have believed it. They also lost to Tottenham Hotspur of all people in the Europa League final and are now out of European competitions in the 2025/26 season. Ruben Amorim took over as manager mid-season, but by then the situation had deteriorated a lot. Now the question is—will this club be able to stand on its feet again?

There was some hope in the summer transfer window. By signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, United displayed that they want to attack again. Young Diogo Leon has also joined the team, which gives a glimpse of the future. However, the real problem is the same as last season—the lack of a clinical striker. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both failed to satisfy expectations, leaving the club looking for a new number nine.

Newcastle United make the first move for Sesko

Benjamin Sesko has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time now, but now Newcastle United have moved ahead in the race. Santi Aouna reports that the Magpies have made an initial offer of €72-74m to RB Leipzig. That’s close to Leipzig’s asking price, so they stand a good chance of completing a deal. However, the decision is Sesko’s own – will he wait for Manchester United or choose Newcastle United?

Newcastle’s €72-74m bid puts them in pole position, especially since United’s funds are tight after splashing £133m on Cunha and Mbeumo

The Slovenian striker is only 22 years old, but the pace, power and accuracy he brings to his game show he could be a perfect fit for Amorim’s squad. He is tall but has great movement inside the box. The Leipzig striker is a great presence in the box, but also knows how to create an attack on the wings. All of these qualities make him perfect for the Premier League.

From a fan’s perspective, this deal is important

Manchester United don’t just need good players right now; they need players who are hungry, who want to prove they deserve the big stage, and Benjamin Sesko is just that. Hojlund and Zirkzee have disappointed, while adding Sesko to Cunha and Mbeumo would bring life to the front trio. However, Newcastle United have already put in the pressure with an offer.

The issue is money. We have already spent £133m on Cunha and Mbeumo. If we want to bring Sesko in, someone like Alejandro Garnacho or Hojlund will have to be sold as soon as possible. There have been talks of sending Antony to Al-Nassr, and if that deal goes through, United might have the funds to meet Leipzig’s demands, but then again, United have to get the desired fee for the Brazilian, which we don’t think the club will get.  Vivell’s long-standing ties to Leipzig could work in United’s favour, but time is running out. If the club delays, Newcastle United could seal the deal.
