Manchester United face competition from Liverpool and West Ham United for Idrissa Gueye
Manchester United disappointed their fans again in the 2024/25 season. Finishing 15th in the Premier League, losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, and spending the next season without any European competition – all of this was bittersweet for a historic club. Ruben Amorim took over mid-season, but time ran out before things improved. There were hopes that Amorim would bring about a change, but the team remained in a somewhat similar state – scattered, breathless and aimless.
Now that the new season is about to begin, the club have at least shown some urgency in the transfer market. Signing high-profile names like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can be considered a solid start for United. Bringing in youngsters like Diogo Leon has also indicated that the club are taking building for the future seriously. However, the question is – will this be enough? Under Amorim, United want to create a new identity, and for that, they need players who bring experience as well as potential. This makes sense for another young name – Idrissa Gueye.
Race for Idrissa Gueye
We earlier reported that Manchester United have shown interest in FC Metz’s 18-year-old striker Idrissa Gueye. The club’s scouts have been present at many of Gueye’s matches in recent months. This is the same Gueye who was signed by Metz in January from the Generation Foot academy and has contributed five goals and one assist in 17 games in Ligue 2.

The number of goals may not seem high, but this level of performance is considered promising in French football at the age of 18. Gueye has a direct style; he is quick to find space behind defenders, and his timing in the box is commendable. He is valued at €20 million, but the difficulty now is that United are not the only ones eyeing Gueye.
How important is this transfer for Manchester United?
Now reports from Football Insider are also saying that clubs like Liverpool and West Ham have also approached Metz for Gueye. Also in the race are Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Southampton and Ipswich. Clearly, the competition has heated up. This is a difficult turn for United, because if the €20 million amount for a young player like Gueye increases further, it could upset United’s plans in terms of FFP.
Manchester United still have a chance to gain an edge – the club’s identity, Amorim’s reputation for working with youngsters, and the possibilities available for Gueye set United apart from other clubs. However, Liverpool’s presence in the Champions League and West Ham’s current aggressive transfer approach could become obstacles for United. We should not waste any time now. If we want to bring Gueye, we need to make a solid offer immediately.
Will United win the race for Gueye?
As United fans, we do believe that players like Gueye can lay the foundation for the future. His age, energy and development direction fit Amorim’s project. but United need to be careful about Gueye’s price and competition. If Liverpool or another club make a quick offer, Gueye’s inclination could change.
United need to make a smart decision based on Gueye’s talent at this point – neither too late nor too cheap. If they make a move before this transfer window gets hot, it is possible to bring Gueye to Old Trafford. However, the truth is that if the price keeps rising and the competition gets even hotter, we may have to get used to seeing another club with Gueye again.
