Chelsea agree personal agreement with Manchester United target Xavi Simons

Manchester United’s name have once again been linked with another high-profile transfer. The talk is of the Dutch rising star Xavi Simons, who is currently at RB Leipzig. If reports are to be believed, Chelsea have agreed personal terms with him and now negotiations are going on between the clubs on the price.

United’s performance have not been up to expectations for the last few seasons. Now the club are in another phase of change under the new regime of Ruben Amorim. Trophies are still far away, and the squad seems to need to be rebuilt. The recent entry of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo seems to bring some stability to the frontline. However, the real problem still remains the number nine, which reappears in the middle of every season.

Update on Simons

According to CaughtOffside‘s report, talks between Xavi Simons’ agents and Chelsea have progressed. Personal terms have been agreed and now the ball is in the clubs’ court. Leipzig can ask for up to €80 million, but the price can be a little less depending on the package. United’s name was also linked with him earlier, but now Chelsea seem to be at the forefront of this race.

Chelsea agree personal agreement with Manchester United target Xavi Simons.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Xavi Simons seems redundant given their recent signings and tactical setup under Ruben Amorim.

Simons is a fast, clever and versatile attacking midfielder. The Dutchman has good ball control and the ability to create chances. He showed his skills in the system of PSV and then PSG and is now proving himself in Germany as well. However, the question is, do United need him?

United swinging between need and extravagance

We should look at this thing with a cool mind. Our team already have Cunha, Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount if fit. All of them fit the role of a number 10 or second striker. Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system utilizes them to their fullest. Bringing in the 22-year-old would mean adding another option when the first position is already crowded.

Even if we spend €70-80 million, would it be money spent in the right direction? Rasmus Hojlund is struggling, and the club are even looking at Benjamin Sesko in search of a striker. Adding another attacking midfielder would seem like a cosmetic move that may do more harm than good.

We need a striker who can convert chances into goals. The team doesn’t lack creativity, but finishing is a must. Simons is a great player, but sometimes the right players can spoil the squad at the wrong time. Instead of getting carried away and chasing every big name, it’s better to identify our needs and do what makes our team stronger. What United need right now is balance, not clutter.
