Manchester United are interested in Danish star Morten Hjulmand
For years, Manchester United fans have dreamed of a more compact, more organised side, one that isn’t fragile through the middle. But last season was nothing short of a disaster. We finished 15th in the Premier League, lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, and missed out on European football for the 2025/26 campaign. The dominant identity we once had is still missing. Rúben Amorim, brought in mid-season, couldn’t fully steady the ship. And while the arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha should bolster the attack, the midfield remains a glaring unresolved issue.
For the past three seasons, our midfield has resembled a black hole. Casemiro is no longer the force he once was. Christian Eriksen has moved on. Manuel Ugarte has yet to settle, and although Kobbie Mainoo is a gem in the making, he can’t be expected to carry the midfield on his own. There’s no real balance between defence and attack and it’s cost us dearly. Bruno Fernandes continues to give everything, but more often than not, he’s left isolated. This structural weakness has made us vulnerable time and again and until it’s fixed, we’ll keep falling short.
The Danish option being floated at Old Trafford
According to A Bola, and cited by the Manchester Evening News, United have set their sights on Morten Hjulmand. The 26-year-old Danish midfielder played 47 games for Sporting last season. Ruben Amorim has complete faith in him. It’s no coincidence that his name is appearing now, just as Amorim has begun to have a strong say in the team’s planning. The Portuguese coach is said to consider him key to building his vision in Manchester.

Hjulmand may be a defensive midfielder by trade, but he brings far more to the table than just breaking up play. He reads the game exceptionally well, anticipates danger, and has the vision to pick out progressive passes. Under Rúben Amorim at Sporting CP, he thrived as the heartbeat of the 3-4-2-1 system, press-resistant, aggressive in duels, and tactically disciplined. At 26, he may not be elite in every category, but he offers something Manchester United have sorely lacked: control. He shields the backline, dictates the tempo, and covers ground without compromising the team’s shape. In a project that demands balance and structure, Hjulmand looks like a very serious and sensible fit.
Is he the right player, at the right time?
Hjulmand isn’t a headline-grabbing signing. He won’t sell shirts like Garnacho or Mbeumo might, and that’s exactly why he feels like the kind of reinforcement we actually need. The Danish midfielder already understands what Rúben Amorim demands. He proved it in Lisbon, where he was the tactical engine of a well-drilled side. Bringing him in wouldn’t be a gamble, it would be a logical continuation of the manager’s philosophy. We need someone who can protect Kobbie Mainoo, give Bruno Fernandes the freedom to attack, and provide stability in the heart of the pitch. And with 47 top-level appearances last season, he comes ready, not raw.
Of course, the numbers matter. Hjulmand’s release clause stands at €80 million, and Sporting are reportedly demanding around €50 million , a tough ask considering the club has already spent big on Cunha and Mbeumo. Financial flexibility is tight. Sancho hasn’t been sold. Rashford has only left on loan to Barcelona. Garnacho’s future remains uncertain. And on top of that, we still don’t have a proven number nine or a dependable goalkeeper. So while Hjulmand makes footballing sense, making the move financially feasible will require decisive action in the outgoing market , something United haven’t always been great at.
