Chelsea step up efforts to sign Manchester United target Xavi Simons
Transfer rumours never cease, especially in the summer. As a Manchester United fan, every name that comes up raises eyebrows and sparks excitement, but it also demands a cool head. Xavi Simons is back on the radar, this time with a bang, as Chelsea accelerate toward a deal for the Dutchman. We, from a distance, watch the chips move without losing sight of what we already have and what we really need. Sometimes, the desire to add talent overshadows the need to build a balanced team, and that’s where United must be careful.
In recent seasons, Manchester United have been a team in constant reinvention. Since Ferguson’s departure, projects have piled up and crumbled with equal speed. Erik ten Hag also departed and was followed by Ruben Amorim mid-season, but the results have yet to reflect that promise. The Red Devils are not playing in Europe next season, and the inconsistency persists; so does the lack of goals. The defence has been unstable, and the midfield, although has the required quality, doesn’t always perform at their best. The board continues to look for formulas, but none have fully gelled.
Now, with Amorim on the bench and a 3-4-2-1 system under construction, the focus is on consolidating an identity, not simply signing for the sake of signing. Bryan Mbeumo already arrived with a strong price tag and a versatile attacking profile. His signing marked a clear commitment to a defined style.
Chelsea are pushing hard for Xavi Simons

According to Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea are intensifying talks with Xavi Simons’s entourage. Leipzig are willing to sell, but are demanding €70 million. The Blues are trying to lower that price. Meanwhile, we have been reportedly linked to him as well. There is no agreement yet, but talks are progressing. Everything seems to indicate that the Dutchman will change teams this summer.
Simons is young, creative, and a pacey player. He can play inside or outside, and his vision stands out as his best trait, as does his ability to link up in tight spaces. The 22-year-old has shone in the Bundesliga. He is a striking profile for any team looking for an attacking spark, but that doesn’t mean the Dutchman is what we need most.
One more star doesn’t solve everything
Since Mbeumo’s signing was confirmed, United have already filled the need for a versatile attacking midfielder. The Cameroonian offers goals, assists, and proven performances in the Premier League. He fits well into Amorim’s system and will have chemistry with Cunha. Spending another bomb on Simons seems redundant. We don’t question his talent, but not every talent fits in the same starting eleven. We already have Cunha, Mbeumo, Mount and Bruno for that position, and hence Simons is not a must.
The priority is something else. Højlund has suffered with his performances in front of the goal. The Dane hasn’t fully established himself as the killer striker we so desperately need, and until that’s resolved, the team’s performance will continue to drop. Spending on a profile similar to Mbeumo and Cunha’s will only generate unnecessary internal competition, frustration, and a waste of the budget.
You also have to think about what you can get from the market. If Alejandro Garnacho really wants to leave, selling him could generate millions that could be reinvested. Instead of Simons, going for a more experienced number nine, like Watkins, Sesko, or even Jackson, would make more sense. You have to be strategic, not emotional. United don’t need another high-profile name; they need goals, they need depth, and they need to avoid repeating past mistakes. Buying well isn’t just about bringing in quality; it’s about knowing when to say “no.” In this case, Xavi Simons isn’t the answer.
