Manchester United youngster Harry Amass set to leave on loan this summer
Manchester United are in a constant state of rebuilding. Changes of manager, signings that don’t fit in, youngsters who come and go, have all been the norm in the last few seasons. However, one thing remains the same: the hope that a youngster from the youth academy will make it in the first team. One such boy is Harry Amass, a left-back who has caught the eye amid the chaos of last season. At just 18, Amass has already tasted what it’s like to play on big nights in Europe and earned minutes in the Premier League, but this year, the picture is different, and his story is about to take a turn away from Old Trafford.
For the past two seasons, the club has been trying to find balance in the squad. Under Erik ten Hag and now Ruben Amorim, a mix of ideas has been seen, but consistency is still lacking. Last season showed a defence hit by injuries and a squad in need of depth. This opened the door for guys like Amass to emerge. However, that situation also made it clear that there is still some way to go. With signings such as Diego León and the emergence of Patrick Dorgu, the club strengthened the left flank. That complicates the options for Amass, at least for now.
A loan looking to the future:
The reason was clear: he would go out on loan. They want him out to play. It is no longer about giving him emergency minutes, but about him growing with weekly responsibility. The destination club has not been confirmed, but there is said to be a lot of interest, especially from the Championship.

Amass has the technical attributes, pace, good off-the-ball reading and an uncommon maturity for his age. Last season, he performed in difficult scenarios and did not hide under pressure. If he finds the consistency, he can return more complete. The Englishman’s departure is not a punishment, but a decision designed to strengthen him.
Thinking about his future and that of the club:
As United fans, we think it’s a sensible move. Sometimes, to really grow, you have to step away from the spotlight a bit. Amass will have no space this year. Dorgu and Shaw are the ones ahead of him, and with Leon making merit from day one, it’s not worth leaving him stagnating on the bench. He needs to play, he needs to make mistakes, learn, recover, and he’s not going to get that by coming on for five minutes in settled games.
If Amass goes to a club like Leicester, where the demands are high but the atmosphere can allow him to let loose, then it will be ideal. It reminds me a bit of what happened with Amad Diallo. Nobody expected him to come back so ready, now he is fighting for a place. Amass could do the same. This departure could mark the before and after, and if all goes well, in 2026/27, he’ll be ready to really compete. In the end, it’s not about rushing him; it’s about preparing him, and that, at least this time, United seem to have got it right.
